TMJ Disorder
Temporomandibular dysfunction, often referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) or TMJ disorder, is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the surrounding muscles and structures of the jaw.
It can cause a range of symptoms, including jaw pain, jaw clicking, jaw locking, facial pain, headaches, and difficulty in opening and closing the mouth. Causes and Risk Factors for TMD include teeth grinding (bruxism), injury from trauma to the jaw or face, high stress levels and arthritis
If this is something that concerns you, book in for a free TMD consultation with one of our trained dentists.
Our dentists start with conservative, non-invasive approaches and may progress to more invasive methods if necessary. These treatments include:
1. Self-Care: Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding hard or chewy foods, practicing stress management, and using hot or cold packs on the jaw, can help manage symptoms.
2. Oral Appliances: Our dentists may prescribe oral splints or mouthguards to alleviate jaw clenching and grinding and to help maintain proper jaw alignment.
3. Medications: Administered as an injection directly into the jaw muscles, muscle relaxants, or anti-inflammatory drugs can provide temporary relief from pain and inflammation.
4. Botox Injections: Botulinum toxin injections can temporarily reduce muscle tension and alleviate TMD symptoms.
It’s important for individuals experiencing TMD symptoms to consult with our dentist for a proper diagnosis.
