Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and Onlays are often considered for individuals with decaying rear teeth, or teeth that aren’t quite damaged enough to warrant a crown.
They are made from tooth-colored porcelain, composite resin or even gold. Inlays are custom-fitted to repair decay or damage in the ridges of the teeth; onlays, also custom-fitted, are used to repair decay and damage that occurs on more than one cusp (point) of the tooth. Each tooth has four points or cusps.
Inlays and onlays look very natural, so no one even knows they’re not your real teeth! They are also strong and durable – necessary qualities for those busy back molars.
How long do Inlays and Onlays last?
With proper care, they can last for decades! As long as you continue to brush, floss, and maintain your regularly scheduled visits with us as well as take care of your teeth, your restorations shouldn’t have any problems.
Can they fall out?
While it’s unlikely to fall out, it is possible. Usually, this happens when biting something too hard or if the tooth experiences trauma. Our team can easily place them back into your mouth quickly.
Are they painful?
Most patients find this type of treatment extremely tolerable. We’ll do our best to keep you comfortable and relaxed, and use a local [anesthetic] to manage any pain.
